The Mississippi River, the "Father of Waters", is the longest river in the U.S.
stretching 2,348 miles. Wabasha is one of the oldest towns on the upper Mississippi
River established in 1826. The town was named after chief Wapasha leader of the Dakota people.
In 1930 the U.S. corps of engineers did an extensive study of the river and determined a nine
foot navigation channel could be constructed. This would be accomplished by constructing
locks and dams. There are 27 locks and dams from Minneapolis to St. Louis, Missouri. Each
lock and dam creates a "Pool" that extends upstream to the next dam.
The pool is designated a number that is the same as the lock and dam that created it.
Wabasha is on Pool 4. There are almost 100 wing dams and closing dams from the foot
of lake Pepin to Lock and Dam #4.
